Health Report 2007
Important Note
Please note that, regarding all of the conditions described, these are only the cases that have been reported to us. We do feel there may be other dogs/lines affected and that these have either not yet been diagnosed or not yet reported to us.
As and when we receive any further information, the ’TUS Health Report’ will then be updated.
| Cataracts |
BackgroundThis condition is as with humans there are many factors causing them, from hereditary, genetic, age head trauma etc etc. Cataracts are identified by a cloudy discoloration over the retina of the eye and are usually quite easy to see to the naked eye. CausesThere are many causes, the main ones being, hereditary, development of diabetes mellitus, old age or severe head trauma, but usually they are hereditary, therefore any dogs being considered for breeding, must first be eye tested. TreatmentUsually your dog’s ophthalmologist will fully assess and properly advise on your individual dog’s case but basically they usually suggest an operation to remove the lens, however not all cases are operable. Apparently there is no non surgical treatment for cataracts, but one of the links below refutes this. Breeding AdviceObviously any dog known to suffer from cataracts should not be bred from. Any dog known to be from lines affected should obviously be tested and closely monitored. Lines known to have been affected so farEngrish, Okami, Sulin Links
