Chronology of the Utonagan, and related, Societies/groups. |
The Facts are: - About 1996/7 - "Northern Inuit" was the name chosen for an up and coming new breed of dog, that had it's origin in the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute and German Shepherd. A group of owners/breeder set up the Northern Inuit Society.
- The "Northern Inuit Society" split, creating the "Northern Inuit Society" and the "Northern Inuit Society of Great Britain".
- 2002 - the "Northern Inuit Society" decided on the breed name Utonagan, and thus renamed as "The Utonagan Society", (TUS) as they felt this provided some further clarity between the now diverging breed lines of the two societies. There is also a further, completely separate, northern breed of dog called the "Inuit" or Greenland Dog, which was causing some additional confusion as those dogs are quite different in nature to both the laid back, non-aggressive Utonagan and the Northern Inuit.
- This left just one NI Society which, quite reasonably, reverted to the title the "Northern Inuit Society" (i.e. minus the GB part) who are still going strong today.
- 2003 - There was yet another parting of ways and the one "Utonagan Society" split into two; "The Utonagan Society" (us!) and the "British and International Utonagan Society".
- March 2006 - The "British and International Utonagan Society" disbanded.
- August 2006 - The Utonagan Dog Club was formed by Nadia Carlyle, who had been removed from TUS for breaching several of the Breeder's Rules (precursors to the Breeder's Code of Ethics now in use).
- 2006 - The Tamaskan* Society was created by Ms Lynn Sharkey (of British and International Utonagan Society fame).
- September 2007 - Several core members of The Utonagan Club's committee resigned due to the ongoing ill repute caused by Ms Carlyle.
- November 2007 - The Utonagan Association is formed by the remaining members of The (former) Utonagan Club. Several of it's members have many years experience with Utonagan and seem to have a similar interest to TUS, in improving the genetic health of the Utonagan.
- November 2007 - Unrelated to the above event; the British Utonagan Association is set up by 2 former members of TUS. One was recently removed from our registered breeders list for breaches of the Breeders Code of Ethics.
- The present - The Utonagan Society are definitely still here and moving forward after a couple of committee reshuffles!! It's been hard and is hard at times, but we feel the Utonagan is worth the effort. We often seem to be perceived as being negative, restrictive and inactive ... when we are actually working madly behind the scenes, more often than not having to clear up the messes made by others. That may sound bitchy, but it's true. We'll continue to do our best to help the Utonagan; we've been here long enough that we know what we're talking about, and in time more and more people will come to realise that
It really just goes to show that dogs are smarter than humans ...
