I think I want to breed Utonagan. How do I go about this?

Don't buy a puppy with the concrete intention of breeding from it. You can't always tell how they'll mature so wait and see how he/she turns out before going down that road. Then you'll still have to have all the relevant tests done, as stated above. If your Utonagan passes with flying colours you'll need to agree to and sign TUS's Breeder's Code of Ethics (as amended 2007). The committee have a central database from which they can advise any potential breeder of which dog or bitch would be compatible with theirs. Plus, of course, they can then put you in touch with any of the registered, existing, breeders.

Be patient. Utonagan are physically mature enough to breed by about 18 months, but still have further to go. They are only really fully adult between 3 and 4 years of age. We set the minimum breeding age for bitches at 2 years, dogs 18 months. This is a minimum standard, not a target to breed as soon as possible after that point. The longer you wait (to a point obviously, particularly where bitches are involved) the more chance you have of being able to ensure you produce healthy dogs and bitches. Some health conditions (i.e. epilepsy) cannot be tested for without the dog already being affected - after which of course it cannot be bred from - and may take several years to surface.
