Utonagan Welfare

It is a sad but inevitable fact that, as a breed gains popularity and becomes more numerous, some dogs will find themselves "surplus to requirements", as it were. Any ethical, trustworthy breeder will accept responsibility for their puppies FOR LIFE, so they should be your first port of call if and when you need to re-home your Utonagan, or any other dog. If for some reason they cannot/will not take back a dog they have bred, or indeed if you have some special reason why you do not wish to contact your breeder, we will of course still help you with re-homing your Utonagan in any way we can.

There have been a great deal of litters born in the past few years, mostly to very few breeders and often to breeders to whom no dog should be given back (see News pages) hence we have seen an exponential rise in the number of Utonagan needing new homes. We thank everyone who has given a new, loving home to a rescue Utonagan - be it from us or elsewhere - but are sad to say that there will always be more homes needed.

"Utonagan Welfare will only guarantee to contact registered breeders if one of their dogs is handed in, or reported to be in a rescue centre. Other, non-registered, breeders may be contacted out of courtesy, but this is at Utonagan Welfare's discretion."

N.B. Anyone can claim to be running a rescue service. The Utonagan Society has a small network of trusted volunteers who will do their best to take in any Utonagan in need. No profit is made. We re-home with a stringent contract to prevent Utes in our care from further harm. Unfortunately, at this time, we cannot and do not recommend any other Utonagan rescue service.

Dogs needing new homes

JED

[Photo to follow. Jed is a long haired, black and tan Utonagan with erect ears and a curly tail. He stands at around 26 inches at the shoulder]

Jed is an 18 month old male, unneutered, Utonagan currently being cared for at Easterleigh Animal Sanctuary in St. Annes, Lancashire, whom we thank once again for their help in taking in Utonagan. Jed will be neutered as he leaves Easterleigh. He is fully vaccinated and will be re-homed subject to a homecheck, once it has been evaluated that the potential new owner is capable of taking care of him.

Jed is a boisterous young lad who loves people and has a very loving nature. Sometimes a little too loving as he enjoys 'bear-hugging' the staff at Easterleigh! He will not be homed to a household with small children purely due to his size and the amount of time he is likely to take up, mostly for re-training but he's also an energetic dog who will benefit from plenty of exercise. 'Re-training' almost exclusively refers to his lack of manners on the lead, particularly when meeting other dogs. Jed could live with another dog but a female would be preferable. Please bear in mind that a timid dog would find him somewhat over-bearing, even if he just wants to play. A laid-back, fun-loving dog would be best, though he could also manage as an only dog.

Please call the Sanctuary on 01253 789185 or Naomi, our welfare co-ordinator who also works at Easterleigh, on 07813 439531 if you are interested in Jed. Remember you will have to travel to St. Annes to visit Jed and will not be able to take him on the same day. Ideally you will own your own property and you MUST have a large, secure garden with minimum 6' high fences/walls.

STORM (urgent)

[Photo to follow. Storm is a short haired, grey and buff 'wolf' marked Utonagan with flopped ears and a curly tail]

Storm is a 2 and a half year old, neutered, male Utonagan currently living in Wales. As you might expect, he has a marvellous temperament and makes a fantastic family pet, however Storm is quite dominant with other male dogs. Thus far this largely seems to extend to his own father, who he lives with, but he has also had some disagreements with his brother. Storm is actually quite happy with other dogs, male or female, when out of the house which means that he should settle fine in a new home with maybe just one, female, dog.

Storm is much loved by his current family but they have decided that it is going to be best for everyone for him to go to a new home where he doesn't feel the need to assert his authority over the other dogs. He has been a wondeful pet in every other way and is NOT a problem with people at all. His case is urgent because the family want him to be relieved of stress and for that he unfortunately needs a new, loving home; thus the sooner he can find that the sooner he can settle into a nice, calm life.

Again, you will need a large, secure garden with minumum 6' fences/walls.

Please contact the welfare co-ordinator on 07813 439531 if you are interested in Storm.

HARRY

[Photo to follow. Harry looks rather like 'Spotted Wolf Simba' in the gallery, but is short haired.]

Harry is a (nearly) 3 year old, male, unneutered, Utonagan currently living in Berkshire. His owner will be neutering him before he is re-homed. He is fully vaccinated and in excellent health. Harry is apparently 'the perfect family pet'! He is only being re-homed due to a change in personal circumstances. Harry gets on brilliantly with everybody and is best friends with his owners' 12 year old son. He loves his walks but is also happy to settle down on his bed afterwards. He is currently living as an only dog.

It's probably worth mentioning that Harry is very good at opening doors, even the front one so he can take himself for a walk! He also likes to sing along to sirens, lol

If you are interested in Harry please contact our welfare co-ordinator on 07813 439531.
