Where can I get a Utonagan?

There are Utonagan and Utonagan breeders up and down the length of the country. Check the breeders pages where you'll find their contact details, and website addresses where applicable. If no-one has any pups at present they will pass you on to someone who does or will soon. Some may have older dogs to re-home.

You can also check our welfare page if you would like to offer a rescued Utonagan a new home.

You may well see adverts either in local press or on other internet pet sites, but it's definitely worth checking with us first, as there are some unscrupulous breeders out there. Some have been known to sell GSD x husky pups as Utonagan (which would give you a completely different and unexpected temperament of dog) others may not be providing accurate pedigrees, which may sound trivial but will be important if the worst happens and your dog develops health problems.

Do not be afraid to challenge any breeder to provide documentation backing up their claims for having carried out health tests. Not only that but check the results are good i.e. eye tests are clear, hip scores preferably even, but definitely below the breed average, currently 27. Remember, the higher the score, the greater the dysplasia. Don't be taken in by claims that the score is only high/uneven due to an accident. This is very difficult to ascertain for sure; even vets can rarely say this with any certainty.

When faced by a lovely brood bitch surrounded by adorable puppies, it is very easy to forget all this and take a pup on faith. For the sake of yourself, your pup and the breed as a whole, PLEASE take care. No-one is infallible, but if you've taken all the precautions you possibly could you have the least chance of being bitten (metaphorically speaking) later on.
